Summary Statement Community facilitation, urban planning and design, landscape architecture, and the construction of catalyst urban projects are central to my practice. Urban design experience ranges from the scale of the city to the district, neighborhood, street, park and plaza. Comprehensive analysis and planning, the power of policy to shape urban places, the role of market economics, urban architecture, civic space design and transportation planning are central to my understanding. As the lead or project landscape architect, my portfolio includes Specific Plans, Downtown and Corridor Revitalization Strategies, Urban Park & Open Space Master Plans, and award-winning streets, plazas and parks. An open, collaborative working style is a core principle, and my design approach is realistic and innovative, tied to the core values of the community vision.
For more than twenty years, I’ve helped to produce award winning public improvement projects in California. From 1989 to 1996, as a principal with Singer, Hodges and Evans, a Bay Area landscape architecture firm, my focus was on the planning, design and construction of parks, play environments, sports facilities and trails. From 1996 to 1997, I attended the Master of Urban Design program at UC Berkeley. Following completion of the program, as a principal with the San Francisco Urban Design firm, Freedman, Tung and Sasaki, my work focused on downtown and corridor revitalization projects. In 2001, as a founding partner of SFE Design, a Bay Area urban design and landscape architecture practice, my focus was on the planning, design and construction of downtown, corridor and redevelopment projects. In 2009, I founded davidevansla, a practice providing community facilitation, urban standards and guidelines, current planning support to cities, and the design and construction of catalyst urban projects.
